Supporters braved cold conditions to cheer for competitors as they traversed the Manuherikia River and scrambled up to the hillside to the Alexandra clock.

The opening of the 2009 Festival was full of adrenalin with a strong group of competitors confronting the cold conditions and the tough course as they ran, swum, kayaked, called specially trained dogs, rode horses pedalled mountain bikes to conquer the course of steep terrain and icy river.

‘Linger and Die’ park was home to this free event which featured performances by local band 'The Dude Pistons'. Showers of confetti delighted younger attendees and the great evening finished with a sparkling display of fireworks.

Competitors had the opportunity to nominate a charity or community organisation of their choice. The entry drawn at random was The Alexandra Youth Forum which will be given a $1,000 donation from Contact Energy.
