THE OTAGO DAILY TIMES TARBERT STREET MARDI GRAS

This is an event that attracts young families and the traditional Festival Week opening event, the Mardi Gras, was once again an exciting and family focused kick-start to Alexandra’s annual festival of spring.

More than 2000 people, mainly family groups, turned out to enjoy all the fun, frivolity and thrills and spills which signaled the start of a successful festival weekend.

This was held on Friday, September 24, 2011  in Lower Tarbert Street from 7pm to 9pm.

Streets in the retail area were closed to all traffic to allow a host of activities aimed at the young, and young at heart.

The MoreFM Festival King was Blair Wells.

Among competitions were the Best Dressed Bike, Flying Hundred Cycle races, Truck pull and Bed Races.

Live Music and Food Stalls all added to the ambience of the opening event of  Festival week.

In 2012 the Mardi Gras will be Friday, September 21.
